President's Message
Hello, My name is Jane Ramsay. It is an honour to serve as President of the historical society for 2024/2025. Unlike many in the organization I have no previous ties or relations in Grenville County. However, I do share a keen interest in Ontario history. I grew up on a generational farm in the Newmarket area. At one time the property included the site of the Sharon Temple. The structure was built by a member of the Newmarket Quaker community who broke away and formed a religious group called the Children of Peace. My Great Grandfather maintained the Temple until it was taken over by the York Pioneer Society. Today the Temple is a National Historic Site and Museum. Upon retirement I was fortunate enough to carry on my passion for history by volunteering with GCHS.
The Society provided a perfect venue for community involvement for a newcomer. There are numerous reference materials for those looking for family history, or for individuals who have recently purchased a property and would like to know about the home or previous inhabitants. Best of all it's filled with dedicated and knowledgeable volunteers who will assist you with specific research or general inquiries.
I am looking forward to maintaining the exceptional standards the Society has produced over the years. To start 2024 off we are now open Saturdays by appointment only. This time will be in addition to our regular Tuesday hours. Saturday provides an opportunity for those who work during the week or students wishing to complete a project.
We have special community occasions lined up this year. Please check our events section for further details.
If you are new to the area please drop in for a tour; or perhaps you are a long time resident and have something to share with us. All are welcome.
